Empowering regional innovation: Five collaborative healthcare solutions for integrating global value chains

HealthChain continues with the validation of the model and has started the co-creation process of five innovative healthcare solutions to strengthen innovation ecosystems in emerging regions and enhance their participation in global value chains. These solutions have been selected through an open call for SMEs. Each solution is co-created and piloted by a Healthcare Organization, IT company, and an Ecosystem Supporter (a regional business enabler facilitating cross-border collaboration). The participating regions, referred to as “Mirror Regions,” include Navarra (Spain), Western Greece, Castilla y León (Spain), Flanders (Belgium), and North-West Romania.

MoveBuddy (Flanders)

Healthcare Organisation: Az Groeninge Hospital

IT Company: Raak

Ecosystem Supporter: Medvia

Raak is working in close collaboration with Az Groeninge Hospital to develop MoveBuddy, a digital platform designed to combat childhood obesity. The challenge identified by Az Groeninge focuses on motivating children to adopt healthier lifestyles through gamification and real-time feedback. Raak’s technical expertise in product design and engineering ensures that the solution effectively meets this need, while Medvia facilitates collaboration across regions.

iMotion (Castilla y León)

Healthcare Organisation: Los Montalvos Hospital

IT Company: BLUE Connecting Emotions

Ecosystem Supporter: Intras Fundación

BLUE Connecting Emotions is co-creating the iMotion solution with Los Montalvos Hospital to address the challenge of delivering palliative care in rural areas. By developing a remote monitoring system that tracks patients’ emotional states, BLUE ensures that healthcare professionals can intervene in a timely and personalized manner. This collaboration anticipates patient needs and improves care outcomes, while Intras Fundación supports the regional connectiwion.

TRIME (Western Greece)

Healthcare Organisation: General Hospital of Ilia

IT Company: Digital Health Services

Ecosystem Supporter: DoctorsHello

For the TRIME challenge, Digital Health Services will introduce the RETIMO monitoring system, providing continuous, real-time tracking of medical parameters. Data is integrated into patients’ electronic medical records (EMR), accessible to healthcare professionals for diagnosis and treatment. With encrypted video communication, the solution enhances remote patient care and aligns with critical outpatient monitoring needs. DoctorsHello will play a key role in strengthening regional collaboration to support the solution’s success.

AITRIS (North-West Romania)

Healthcare Organisation: Medisprof Cancer Center

IT Company: Rayscape

Ecosystem Supporter: FreshBlood

For the AITRIS challenge, Rayscape will propose a suite of oncology-focused AI algorithms and leverage AI to improve lung cancer diagnostics through advanced radiology tools. By automating lung nodule analysis on CT scans, the platform assists radiologists with both incidental findings and follow-up tracking. This AI-driven solution aims to streamline diagnostic processes, improving accuracy and efficiency in oncology care. FreshBlood will contribute to the development of this challenge by facilitating regional collaboration.

OPER ART (Navarra)

Healthcare Organisation: University Hospital of Navarra

IT Company: Data Value Management

Ecosystem Supporter: Navarrabiomed

Data Value Management will co-develop personalized 3D moulds in radiotherapy with the University Hospital of Navarra. The solution focuses on developing customized immobilization devices and applicators that integrate seamlessly with radiotherapy planning systems. By solving this challenge, the collaboration enhances the precision and effectiveness of cancer treatments, with support from Navarrabiomed in facilitating the regional ecosystem.

These five solutions demonstrate the power of collaborative innovation between Healthcare Organizations, IT companies, and Ecosystem Supporters. By co-creating and piloting solutions tailored to regional needs, these initiatives are building stronger regional ecosystems capable of competing in global value chains, ultimately improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

In the coming months, the selected SMEs will benefit from HealthChain support. They will participate in an intensive month of co-creation and piloting alongside the healthcare organization to test and validate their solutions. Additionally, they will gain access to expert guidance to refine their business strategies and scale their operations effectively.
